Five trends that will explode in 2014

As the New Year approaches, it’s time to wave goodbye to the Bermuda shorts, block colours, peekaboo dresses and monochrome prints of 2013 and say hello to the trends of 2014 – and what a year it looks set to be. If the Spring/Summer 2014 Fashion Week is anything to go by, we’re in for a real treat so here are five trends that could explode over the coming months.

Already available from consumer-to-consumer corporations such as, Steampunk is an exciting, if not rather quirky, trend that’s causing a stir within the fashion world. If you’re wondering what it is, think Victorian elegance meets sci-fi fantasy and you’ll be close to the mark. With everything from equestrian-themed outfits to lace dresses, pin-stripe suits to military trenches you certainly won’t be short of choice and can even complete your outfit with a bowler hat or cyber goggles.

Pretty pastels
If Charles Dickens meets The War of the Worlds is not quite your thing – fear not! Aside from bustles, lace-ups, corsets and veils there’s also another side to the fashion world – pastels. That’s right, pale pinks, mint greens, baby blues and lovely lilacs have all hit the catwalk of late and are sure to make the perfect addition to any spring/summer wardrobe. Everyone from Jason Wu to Rebecca Taylor have including pastels in their latest range, so keep a look out for this style.

Wide-leg trousers
From bell-bottoms to flares, skinny jeans to leggings, we’ve seen a wide range of trouser styles, but the wide-leg variety is set to be popular in the coming year. Billowy bottom halves have been popping up left right and centre on the runway and can be worn with flats, sandals, heels and even wedges. If you fancy giving this look a try, however, choose something with a high waist to elongate your frame and team with a cropped top, short jacket or a knitted jumper – all of which are top on the fashion list for next year.

Bomber jackets
Remember the 90s? If so, you’ll know that bomber jackets were all the rage. Combined with vibrant t-shirts and baggy dungarees they were the thing to own – and now they’re back! That’s right, thanks to the cool bombers launched by fashion designers such as Marc Jacobs, Milly and Tracy Reese you can enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane but with a modern twist. Opt for something with sporty detailing, mesh weaving and plenty of colour and you’ll be bang on trend next year.

Tea-length skirts
Back in the 1960s, it was all about the leg. The anti-war, flower power revolution that took place inspired women to unleash their wild side and swap longer skirts for mini alternatives, but things have changed yet again – and that’s the great thing about fashion. Sure, you can still buy thigh skimming numbers, but it’s no longer about showing as much flesh as possible with tea-length skirts proving incredibly popular! Somewhere between a midi and a maxi, they’re great for spring and offer a lovely ladylike hemline.

Fashion trends have changed a lot throughout the years, but watch out for all the best styles for 2014 and feel glamorous in no time.
